Everton rule out Folarin Balogun reunion as David Moyes faces January striker dilemma
Everton have reportedly ruled out a fresh attempt to sign Folarin Balogun in January, dealing a blow to David Moyes’ plans to strengthen his attacking options during the transfer window.
The Toffees are understood to have closed the door on revisiting a deal for the AS Monaco striker, despite the Ligue 1 club signalling a willingness to sanction his departure.
Balogun was previously close to completing a £40 million move to Merseyside, but the proposed transfer collapsed dramatically after the United States international withdrew from negotiations at the final stage.
Sources close to the player indicated that he was unhappy with Everton’s handling of his medical and the broader contract negotiations, leaving him uncomfortable with proceeding with the switch.
Although the former Arsenal forward is reportedly open to leaving France, a return to Everton’s transfer plans is now considered unlikely.
Everton close door on £40m Balogun deal
According to Football Insider, Everton have decided against reviving their interest in Balogun when the January transfer window opens.
The decision comes despite Monaco’s apparent willingness to consider offers for the striker, who could provide the attacking quality Moyes needs to improve his side’s forward line.
However, financial constraints are expected to influence Everton’s recruitment strategy, with budget cuts potentially forcing the club to explore a loan arrangement rather than a permanent transfer.
The situation leaves Moyes with a significant challenge as he looks to reduce his side’s dependence on Thierno Barry in attack.
Dion Beljo emerges as alternative option
With Balogun seemingly out of the picture, Dinamo Zagreb striker Dion Beljo has emerged as a possible alternative for Everton.
The Croatian forward enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at the club in 2025/26, scoring 38 goals and attracting attention with his performances.
His goalscoring record could make him an attractive option for Moyes as Everton assess potential additions ahead of the second half of the season.
However, securing his services may prove difficult, with Beljo reportedly valued at more than £35 million.
That potential price tag could complicate Everton’s pursuit, particularly with the club facing financial limitations that may restrict their ability to make significant investments.
