Munuera Montero receives 1.5 rating after Real Madrid win at Racing Santander

Referee Munuera Montero has been given a rating of just 1.5 out of 10 for his performance in Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory away to Racing Santander in La Liga’s 11th round.

The assessment was published by Archivo VAR, a website specialising in controversial refereeing decisions. It described the display as Munuera Montero’s worst of the current season by a considerable margin and labelled it a “refereeing collapse”.

The referee was criticised for his handling of both straightforward incidents and decisions inside the penalty area. The only decision involving a potential foul that Archivo VAR considered correct was his choice not to award one after Mantilla made extremely slight contact with Yan Diomande by stepping on him.

According to the assessment, Munuera Montero was then almost consistently wrong in his decisions. His disciplinary management was also described as inconsistent, with clear yellow cards ignored while other cautions were shown without sufficient justification.

Two major VAR incidents

The match featured two other controversial incidents, apart from the contact involving Mantilla and Diomande.

The first came when Prati made slight contact with Kylian Mbappe’s abdomen inside the penalty area. The France striker went to ground after feeling the contact, and Archivo VAR judged that the incident clearly warranted intervention from the video assistant referee.

However, VAR official Milla Alvendiz did not recommend an on-field review and was accused of failing to take responsibility for the decision.

The approach was different in the second half, when Milla Alvendiz asked Munuera Montero to review a possible handball involving Aurelien Tchouameni. After watching the footage, the referee decided that the incident did not constitute an offence.

Archivo VAR noted that none of the available images clearly established which player touched the ball first, whether it was the French midfielder or his opponent.

The fixture information accompanying the report lists AEK Athens in the Champions League on 04 November 2026. It also lists Real Madrid against Malaga in La Liga on 07 November 2026, with Racing Santander included in the schedule information.
