Yan Diomande continued his impressive revival for Real Madrid by scoring a spectacular goal against Racing Santander in La Liga on Sunday, strengthening his case to retain a starting place when Vinicius Junior returns from suspension.
The Ivory Coast winger started on the left in Real Madrid’s eighth-round match against Villarreal, with Vinicius named among the substitutes. Diomande scored the only goal as Real Madrid secured victory, while Vinicius was sent off during the game and subsequently received a four-match suspension.
Vinicius has since missed matches against Sevilla and Barcelona, as well as Sunday’s meeting with Racing Santander. He will also be unavailable for the forthcoming fixture against Valencia.
His absence initially raised concerns about the effect on Real Madrid’s attack, particularly as Diomande’s performances had been inconsistent at the start of the season. However, the 14-match player has responded with a notable run of form.
Diomande has scored three goals and provided one assist in his last four La Liga appearances. In the Champions League, he has scored once and set up two goals across his past two matches.
That contribution has prompted widespread reports suggesting Diomande could continue as a starter ahead of Vinicius once the Brazilian completes his suspension.
Hassan Al Aidarous, the commentator for Real Madrid’s game against Racing Santander, referred to that possibility after Diomande’s excellent goal.
“Rest in peace, Vinicius,” he said.
He added: “This is what Real Madrid fans are saying now after Diomande’s brilliance in Vinicius’ absence.”
Diomande endured an uneven beginning to the campaign before developing a stronger understanding with the team. He has now made 14 appearances in total, scoring four goals and recording four assists.
Real Madrid’s listed schedule includes a Champions League match against AEK Athens on 04 November 2026. The club is also due to face Malaga in La Liga on 07 November 2026, while Racing Santander was listed as the latest league opponent.
