Ouaddou trusts Pirates’ young players to handle Soweto derby pressure

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes his emerging players have the confidence and character to make an impact against Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday’s Soweto derby.

The Buccaneers have several promising youngsters who could be given an opportunity in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures, where composure and the ability to cope with intense pressure could prove decisive.

Thapelo Mokobodi and Simphiwe Masilela are among the young players who have attracted attention, with Ouaddou making it clear that age alone will not prevent a player from being considered for the derby.

Instead, the Pirates coach is assessing which youngsters are energised by the occasion and able to perform in front of a large and demanding crowd.

“You have to analyse the profiles of the youngsters you have. If you have a youngster who is excited by the crowd and is excited to show their skills because they feel confident, then that’s someone you can challenge and put him in there,” Ouaddou said.

“And I have players like that, not only one.”

Mokobodi and Masilela could consequently be among those competing for involvement, particularly if Ouaddou decides their confidence and technical ability could help Pirates find a way through Chiefs.

The club also has further young options available in its wider squad. Simphiwe Selepe, Camren Dansin, Mpho Padime and Mohau Nkota are among the players who could add depth, although their possible involvement will depend on the club’s squad plans.

Ouaddou’s approach indicates that he is looking beyond the players’ ages when selecting his team. Their temperament, personality and readiness to operate in a high-pressure environment will also influence his decisions.

The Soweto derby could provide an important platform for one of Pirates’ emerging players to establish himself. Any youngster trusted with a role will be expected to take advantage of the opportunity against Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates will enter the match seeking to uphold their status as the reigning league champions. The prospect of one of their young players responding to the occasion adds another element to Saturday’s contest.
