The Togo Football Awards 2013 were officially launched in Lomé on Thursday. This marks the 9th edition of the awards ceremony, recognizing the best players in Togolese football. There are 13 award categories for this year’s edition. One of the highlights is the anticipation of discovering the winner of the “Best Player Playing Abroad” for the 2012-2013 season.
Alaixys Romao, last year’s winner through public vote and a midfielder for Marseille, is once again in competition, this time against Kossi Agassa, the goalkeeper for Reims. Another notable category is the “Best Togolese playing in the African championships,” with nominees including Djene Dakonam (formerly of Coton Sport Garoua in Cameroon), Dove Wome from Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), and Backer Aloenouvor from Stade Gabésien in Tunisia.
A new addition for this edition is the introduction of free medical care for former Togolese internationals, a gesture to acknowledge their contributions to the development of local football.
The Togo national team, the Eperviers, will receive a Special Award for their historic qualification for the second round of an African Cup of Nations, achieved in January in South Africa.
