Kelechi Iheanacho’s historic scoring streak ends as Bursaspor thrash Bandirmaspor
Kelechi Iheanacho’s extraordinary goalscoring run has finally come to an end, but the Super Eagles striker remains firmly in contention for a Nigeria recall ahead of next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The former Leicester City forward failed to get on the scoresheet as Bursaspor recorded a commanding 3-0 win over Bandirmaspor, featuring fellow Nigerian Tosin Kehinde, at the Atatürk Spor Kompleksi Matlı Stadyumu on Saturday.
Iheanacho’s availability had been a major talking point before the encounter after he sustained a knock during Bursaspor’s 4-2 victory over Ankara Keçiörengücü.
However, following two days of rest, the striker returned to full training and was declared fit, allowing him to make the matchday squad for the home fixture.
Despite being available, the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner struggled to make his usual impact as Bandirmaspor’s defenders kept him under close surveillance throughout the contest.
He was consequently unable to add to his impressive tally of 16 goals and three assists in the Turkish First League.
Historic scoring streak finally comes to an end
Saturday’s outing marked the first time this season that Iheanacho had failed to score, bringing an extraordinary sequence of goalscoring performances to a close.
The 29-year-old had made history on October 15 when he scored against Muğlaspor to register a goal in his 10th consecutive match, setting a record for the longest scoring streak in Turkish football history.
He subsequently extended that remarkable achievement to 11 consecutive matches with another goal against Pendikspor on October 19.
Six days later, Iheanacho continued his incredible form by finding the net against Ankara Keçiörengücü, taking his scoring sequence to 12 successive matches.
His failure to score against Bandirmaspor therefore brings an end to a remarkable individual achievement that has attracted attention across Turkish football.
Nevertheless, his overall contribution to Bursaspor’s campaign remains significant, with 16 goals and three assists highlighting his importance to the club.
Iheanacho eyes Super Eagles breakthrough under Eric Chelle
Despite the end of his scoring streak, Iheanacho remains on the radar of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as Nigeria prepares for next month’s 2027 AFCON qualifying matches against Tanzania.
Chelle is expected to announce his squad within the next seven days, with the Bursaspor forward hoping his impressive performances over recent weeks will earn him an opportunity.
Interestingly, Iheanacho is yet to feature in a competitive match for the three-time African champions since the Malian took charge of the national team.
His current form in Turkey, however, has strengthened his case for consideration as the Super Eagles prepare for another important international assignment.
Although his historic scoring sequence has ended, Iheanacho will be looking to return to the scoresheet quickly and maintain his impressive contribution to Bursaspor’s promotion ambitions.
