Former Sierra Leone defender Steven Caulker lands three job offers after emotional LinkedIn plea goes viral
Former Liverpool and Tottenham defender Steven Caulker has received three potential job offers and more than 100 messages of support within 48 hours of making a heartfelt public appeal for employment on LinkedIn.
The 34-year-old, who revealed he had been struggling to secure job interviews despite possessing the necessary qualifications, said his post generated 49 offers and opportunities across different industries, highlighting the impact of social media in his search for a new career opportunity.
Caulker, who retired from professional football in 2025 after a 16-year playing career, had been without a job since leaving Turkish Super Lig side Konyaspor in September.
His appeal on Sunday, in which he openly discussed the difficulties of unemployment and the emotional challenges of navigating his next career move, quickly attracted attention and prompted an overwhelming response.
From struggling to secure interviews to 49 opportunities
In his initial LinkedIn post, the former centre-back admitted that finding employment had been particularly challenging, despite his experience and qualifications.
“Being unemployed is stressful. I’ve been here many times before, I’m used to the rollercoaster of emotions, but it doesn’t make it any easier,” he wrote.
Caulker explained that repeatedly applying for positions without securing interviews had been frustrating, although he remained determined not to compromise his long-term ambitions by accepting opportunities that did not align with his goals.
“Applying for jobs for which I have all the qualifications yet am unable to get even an interview hurts, but that does not mean I should panic,” he added.
He also acknowledged that rejection was part of the professional journey, drawing inspiration from the experiences of American entrepreneur Walt Disney.
“Walt Disney was rejected over 300 times; rejection is part of most people’s stories. The bit I find difficult is then turning down the jobs that do come my way which are not aligned with my goals.”
The former defender said maintaining discipline and a structured daily routine had helped him navigate the uncertainty, revealing that his morning run had lifted his mood.
Three job offers among the responses
Less than 48 hours after publishing his appeal, Caulker returned to LinkedIn with an update detailing the remarkable response to his post.
He disclosed that he had received more than 100 messages of support, alongside podcast invitations, business investment proposals, event invitations and three potential employment opportunities.
“The power of LinkedIn,” he wrote.
“On Sunday, I posted about my ongoing job search. 48 hours later, I now have the following: 30+ podcast requests, 12 offers to invest in people’s businesses 4 events to attend 3 potential job offers from different industries 100+ messages of support.”
Despite the encouraging developments, Caulker stressed that the response was only the beginning of his search and that securing his long-term ambition would require consistency and continued effort.
“One post won’t land me my dream job; consistently showing up and doing the right thing will,” he said.
Premier League management remains the ambition
Although the three potential job offers came from different industries, Caulker remains focused on establishing himself in football management, with ambitions of eventually taking charge of a Premier League club.
He believes his playing background and growing coaching experience have provided a foundation for that ambition.
“I am an aspiring Premier League manager with two years of coaching experience, seventeen years of playing experience, and a UEFA A license, while working towards my Pro license,” he stated.
Beyond coaching, the former defender has also developed a career in broadcasting and public speaking, working with major British media organisations including Sky Sports, the BBC, Channel 4 and talkSPORT.
His experience across these areas has given him several professional avenues to explore as he considers his next move.
Caulker made more than 400 appearances during his playing career, including 123 in the Premier League, and represented England before switching international allegiance to Sierra Leone.
He featured for several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers and Southampton, before bringing his playing career to an end in 2025.
After retiring, he moved into coaching and was appointed assistant manager at Konyaspor in February. However, his departure from the Turkish club in September left him searching for another opportunity.
With three potential job offers now on the table and growing interest in his experience, Caulker has encouraged prospective employers to contact him directly.
“If you are interested in knowing more, please send me a DM, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you everyone for all the love and support, and I am wishing those of you in a similar situation the best of luck.”
