Nigeria striker Josh Maja backs Le Havre to bounce back after scoring against PSG

Football changes quickly, and Josh Maja is hoping his recent goalscoring form will translate into better results for Le Havre after their disappointing defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Super Eagles striker was on target against the reigning French champions at the Stade Océane, giving his side an early lead before PSG recovered to claim a convincing victory.

Maja broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, finishing from close range after connecting with Rayan Fofana’s delivery to put Le Havre ahead against the odds.

However, the hosts struggled to maintain their advantage as PSG responded through Mika Godts before Achraf Hakimi completed a hat-trick to condemn Le Havre to a heavy defeat.

Despite the result, Maja can take encouragement from another productive outing in front of goal as he continues to establish himself in the French top flight.

Maja maintains impressive scoring run

The 27-year-old’s latest strike was his fourth in Ligue 1 this season and came just five days after he scored twice in Le Havre’s 4-3 defeat away to Marseille.

His goal against PSG means he has now registered three goals across his last two league appearances, offering a positive return amid his team’s struggles.

The former West Bromwich Albion forward will be keen to maintain that momentum as Le Havre look to improve their fortunes in the coming weeks.

Super Eagles striker takes positives despite PSG defeat

While acknowledging the disappointment of losing heavily at home, Maja believes Le Havre showed enough promise during the contest to take encouragement from their performance.

The striker admitted that facing a side of PSG’s quality was always going to be difficult but insisted his teammates must focus on the positives ahead of their next assignment.

“Disappointed by the defeat against PSG ? Yes, we are disappointed, it was a very difficult match against a very good team. We will take the positives and we will see for the next match,” he said, as quoted by Planetepsg.

Maja also pointed to the opportunities Le Havre created during the encounter but acknowledged that PSG were quick to capitalise whenever the hosts failed to take their chances.

“We had some good moments and good opportunities to score, but they noticed immediately.”

Maja targets stronger start in next fixture

Looking ahead, the Nigerian forward is hopeful that Le Havre can convert their promising moments into better results, particularly by taking the initiative early in their upcoming matches.

He believes getting on the scoresheet before their opponents could make a significant difference as the team seeks to recover from consecutive disappointing results.

“Football changes quickly, I hope that next time we’ll manage to score before the opponent,” he concluded.
