Youri Tielemans backs Michael Carrick as Manchester United players demand stability
Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans has publicly backed head coach Michael Carrick amid growing uncertainty surrounding the Englishman’s future at Old Trafford following the club’s disappointing start to the season.
The Belgian international has insisted that the dressing room wants Carrick to remain in charge, arguing that another managerial change could create further disruption at a difficult time for the club.
Speaking in an interview with TNT Sports ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea, Tielemans revealed that Carrick was one of the reasons behind his decision to join United during the summer transfer window.
“I came here partly because of him, because he wanted me here. He wanted me to help the team out.
“So I’m very happy for him to stay, and the whole group, we don’t want a sudden change.
“We don’t want a big change that is going to disrupt things more than they are. We just need stability, we need to keep working hard, and it’s going to turn at some point,” Tielemans said.
The midfielder also defended Carrick’s work behind the scenes, insisting that the manager continues to enjoy the support of his players despite their struggles.
“Since I’ve come in, he’s always done his work. He’s tried to put a system in place that we all feel comfortable in. I joined this summer, because he convinced me to come over and help the team out.
“I can only speak positively about him, and everyone in the changing room would do the same. We all just need to stick together and turn this situation around.”
Tielemans addresses growing tensions at United
The 29-year-old also discussed the recent public disagreements involving players and senior figures at Manchester United.
Lisandro Martinez had previously criticised technical director Jason Wilcox following questions about the club’s recruitment, while captain Bruno Fernandes publicly expressed concerns about the team’s tactical approach after their Champions League defeat to Como.
Tielemans believes disagreements are natural in football but insists that such matters are better handled internally.
“Everyone is like they are. It’s just a case of trying to do that in the right tone, the right moment.
“We want to win games. We’re all winners, and when frustration builds up, you might have different words and different opinions, which is totally normal. As long as it stays in the group, that’s the best part.”
The midfielder also refused to place responsibility for United’s poor performances solely on the manager.
“It’s not only down to the manager. The manager is doing his work. We as players need to do our work as well. It works both ways.”
Manchester United seek response against Chelsea
United head into Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge under considerable pressure after suffering consecutive defeats against Como and Bournemouth.
Their 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth followed a disappointing 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, leaving Carrick facing increasing scrutiny.
Tielemans believes the players must take responsibility and improve their performances rather than allowing the situation to deteriorate further.
He also acknowledged the frustration of supporters, insisting that the squad understands their disappointment following the recent results.
United will now look to respond against Chelsea, with Tielemans hoping the team can translate their work on the training ground into a positive result.
