Himad Abdelli silences Marseille critics as Bruno Genesio explains Algeria midfielder’s remarkable revival
Himad Abdelli has responded to criticism over his difficult start at Olympique de Marseille with a string of impressive performances, prompting coach Bruno Genesio to highlight the changes behind the Algerian midfielder’s resurgence.
The 26-year-old has scored three goals in his last three Ligue 1 appearances, marking a significant turnaround after struggling to make an impression following his arrival during the winter transfer window.
Once criticised for his performances and limited involvement, Abdelli has gradually become an influential figure in Marseille’s midfield, with his improved fitness, growing confidence and regular playing time contributing to his resurgence.
His deployment as a number 10 has also proved beneficial, giving him greater freedom to showcase his technical qualities and influence proceedings in the final third.
Genesio, speaking at a press conference, attributed the midfielder’s improvement to his own efforts and growing understanding of what is required to perform consistently at the highest level.
Genesio credits Abdelli’s work and growing confidence
The Marseille coach dismissed suggestions that he had personally transformed the Algerian international, insisting that the player’s improved performances were largely down to his own commitment and willingness to address areas of weakness.
“I don’t think I’ve transformed him. We talked about confidence. He is mentally free and has confidence because he is playing regularly. He has also taken responsibility by putting things in place to improve his performances, and he knows that. He still has room for improvement, and he knows that too. He is quite clear-headed about the areas he needs to work on. We know he is a good player who can make a difference, and he has shown that in recent matches, but he still has some steps to take,” Genesio explained.
Regular appearances have allowed Abdelli to settle into the team and play with greater assurance, while his willingness to take responsibility for his development has helped him rediscover the form that made him an important attacking option.
Improved work rate adds another dimension
Beyond his goals and technical ability, Genesio has also been encouraged by the midfielder’s contribution away from the ball.
Abdelli has improved his attacking movements, particularly his runs into dangerous positions, while becoming more effective defensively. His increased involvement in both phases of play has strengthened his overall contribution to Marseille’s collective performance.
The improvements suggest that his resurgence extends beyond his recent goalscoring exploits, with the midfielder becoming more complete in his approach to the game.
However, Genesio is not prepared to consider the matter settled, despite the encouraging signs from his recent performances.
The French coach believes Abdelli still has considerable room for improvement, with consistency now representing the next important step in his development.
Having endured a difficult introduction to life at Marseille, the Algerian has begun to justify the expectations surrounding his arrival. Maintaining his current level over a longer period will now be crucial as he looks to establish himself as a regular and dependable figure in the team’s midfield.
