Algeria defender Sohaib Naïr’s Saint-Étienne rise sets stage for emotional Guingamp return
Sohaib Naïr’s growing influence at AS Saint-Étienne will add significance to his return to En Avant Guingamp, with coach Ian Cathro praising the Algerian international’s personality, commitment and leadership qualities ahead of Saturday’s Ligue 2 encounter.
The 24-year-old defender will return to the Stade du Roudourou, where he began establishing himself in professional football, for the first time since leaving Guingamp for Saint-Étienne during the summer transfer window.
However, Naïr will make the return as a player whose standing has changed considerably since his departure, having quickly become an important member of Cathro’s defensive setup.
His performances have earned him the trust of the Saint-Étienne coach, with the Algerian featuring in every Ligue 2 match since the beginning of the campaign before illness ruled him out of last week’s fixture against Nantes.
The defender’s consistency has underlined his importance to the team, particularly as he continues to adapt to life at one of France’s most recognisable football clubs.
Cathro highlights Naïr’s influence beyond the pitch
While Naïr’s performances on the pitch have attracted attention, Cathro believes his contribution extends beyond his defensive responsibilities.
The Saint-Étienne manager has been particularly impressed by the player’s ability to integrate into the squad, communicate effectively and help strengthen relationships among his teammates.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Guingamp encounter, Cathro praised the defender’s attitude and determination to advance his career.
“He is a player who joined ASSE to take another step forward in his career, and he has adapted very well. He has a very positive personality, both on and off the pitch. He communicates, helps players connect with one another, and is really determined to take the next step in his career. That gives him the opportunity to become an important figure in what we are trying to achieve here at ASSE. I can only say positive things about Sohaib Naïr, both on and off the pitch.”
The coach’s assessment points to the growing responsibility Naïr is assuming within the dressing room, with his communication skills and personality complementing his performances on the pitch.
His ability to establish himself so quickly after arriving in the summer has also strengthened his position as Saint-Étienne pursue their objectives this season.
Algerian international returns to familiar surroundings
For Naïr, Saturday’s fixture will carry significance beyond the three points at stake.
The Stade du Roudourou was an important part of his development, providing the platform on which he gradually established himself in senior football before earning his move to Saint-Étienne.
His return will therefore offer an opportunity to reconnect with a club that played a significant role in his career while demonstrating how far he has progressed since moving on.
Now an Algerian international, the defender is enjoying a new chapter in his career, with his performances at Saint-Étienne reflecting the progress he has made.
Although the occasion could bring mixed emotions, Naïr will be focused on helping his current club secure a positive result against his former employers.
His growing influence at Saint-Étienne means he will return to Guingamp with a different status, having moved from an emerging professional at the Roudourou to an increasingly important figure in Cathro’s plans.
