Bayern Munich, Ajax clash fitting tribute to Raila Odinga – Kenya president William Ruto

Kenyan President William Ruto believes a blockbuster meeting between German giants Bayern Munich and Dutch powerhouse Ajax will provide a fitting tribute to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga when the two clubs inaugurate the Raila Odinga International Stadium in January 2027.

The 60,000-capacity facility, also known as Talanta Sports City, will host the historic encounter on January 5, 2027, with Ruto describing the fixture as a symbolic meeting that reflects Odinga’s personal history and passion for football.

The President believes the involvement of both European clubs gives the occasion a deeper significance, particularly considering Odinga’s educational background in Germany and his longstanding interest in the sport.

“There is a quiet poetry in this fixture. Raila studied in Germany, now a great German club, will come to play in the house that bears his name,” Ruto said.

The former ODM leader, who died in October 2025, was a known football enthusiast with strong connections to Germany.

Ruto highlights significance of Ajax involvement

Ruto also pointed to Ajax’s participation as another important connection to the identity of the new stadium, which takes its name from the Swahili word for talent.

The Dutch club has built much of its reputation around developing young footballers through its renowned academy system, a philosophy the President believes aligns with the vision behind Talanta Sports City.

“Ajax brings poetry of its own. For generations, Ajax built its greatness on young talent, nurtured in an academy whose very name is the future. Talanta means talent. Ajax Academy is called the future. On 5th January 2027, talent and the future will meet in Nairobi,” he said.

The fixture is expected to attract considerable attention across Kenya, with the announcement already generating excitement among football supporters.

Kane, Olise and Neuer among players fans hope to see

Much of the conversation surrounding the encounter has centred on the possibility of seeing some of Bayern Munich’s biggest stars in Nairobi.

Newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane, French winger Michael Olise and veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer are among the high-profile names Kenyan supporters are hoping will feature.

However, Bayern have yet to confirm whether their first-team regulars will travel for the occasion.

The 33-time Bundesliga champions announced the fixture on Wednesday evening but offered no indication of the composition of their travelling squad.

The January 5 date falls during the winter break in both the German Bundesliga and Dutch Eredivisie, potentially providing an opportunity for the clubs to assemble strong contingents.

In its announcement, Bayern highlighted its connections with familiar faces who have previously featured in German football, including former Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt.

Nevertheless, the prospect of watching two of Europe’s most decorated clubs compete on Kenyan soil represents a significant moment for the country’s football landscape.

A historic occasion for Kenyan football

Beyond the sporting spectacle, the encounter will mark the opening of one of Kenya’s major sporting infrastructure projects.

Bayern and Ajax boast rich European histories and extensive trophy collections, making their meeting an attractive occasion for supporters in a country eager to strengthen its international football profile.

For Odinga, the fixture would have carried considerable personal significance.

His connections to Germany, coupled with his well-documented love for football, make the choice of opponents particularly symbolic.

As preparations continue for the stadium’s inauguration, attention will increasingly turn to the teams’ travelling squads and the possibility of some of Europe’s biggest names featuring in Nairobi.

Regardless of who makes the trip, the January 5 encounter will offer Kenya an opportunity to welcome two of world football’s established institutions while honouring a former national leader whose name will be attached to the venue.
