Lionel Messi has no plans to leave Inter Miami, despite continued speculation that he could return to Argentina and play for his former club Newell’s Old Boys, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The 39-year-old still has plenty to offer the Major League Soccer club and remains under contract with Inter Miami. Romano said Messi is not considering a move to another club either in the coming months or further into the future.
“Messi is happy at Inter Miami, despite the latest information being circulated about his first club in Argentina,” Romano said.
The comments were reported by Sport, which said Messi was not thinking about changing his club, despite reports linking him with a possible return to Argentina.
Messi has recently been awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, but his focus remains entirely on Inter Miami. Romano added that Messi and his family are happy living in the United States.
The Argentina captain signed a contract with Inter Miami that runs until 2028 and is currently prepared to honour the agreement through to its conclusion. There are no negotiations with another club.
Romano also said it was possible Messi’s contractual relationship with Inter Miami could continue beyond 2028. However, he stressed that it was far too early to make a decision on an extension, with any future agreement depending entirely on Messi’s physical condition.
The speculation over Newell’s Old Boys has been fuelled by Messi’s long-standing connection with the Argentine club, but the information from Romano indicates that a return is not under consideration at present.
Messi’s projects in the United States
Messi’s commitment to the United States extends beyond his playing career. Among his projects is the Messi Cup, an international football tournament for young players designed to identify emerging talent.
The report also carried fixture listings involving Newell’s Old Boys in the Argentine Primera Division and Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, all dated 01 November 2026.
Those listings included Newell’s Old Boys against Union in the Argentine Primera Division, as well as New England Revolution against Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
For now, however, Messi’s stated position remains unchanged: he is focused on Inter Miami and intends to continue with the club under his existing contract.
