Soweto derby: Key numbers, form and debutants as Pirates face Chiefs

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs meet at FNB Stadium on Saturday in the latest chapter of the Soweto derby, with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm.

The fixture will be the 186th competitive meeting between the two clubs. Kaizer Chiefs have the better record, with 75 derby wins to Orlando Pirates’ 50. A further 55 matches have ended level, while five fixtures were abandoned for various reasons.

The match will also mark a first Soweto derby for Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz. Chiefs defender Thabo Moloisane and Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi are also expected to make their first appearances in the fixture.

Contrasting form

Pirates, the defending league champions, arrive in stronger form. They have won four of their past five matches in all competitions, with their only setback coming in that run.

Kaizer Chiefs have recorded one victory in their previous five games, alongside two draws and two defeats.

The gap in league form is less pronounced, however, as both sides remain unbeaten in the competition. Pirates have collected seven wins and one draw from their opening eight league matches.

Chiefs have won three and drawn five of their eight league games. They are fourth in the table, eight points behind second-placed Pirates.

Players in focus

Tshepang Moremi has emerged as a key attacking threat for Pirates, scoring six goals in 10 appearances this season. He strengthened his claim to be one of the derby’s players to watch by scoring twice in midweek, when Pirates defeated Milford 3-0 in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Chiefs will look to Wandile Duba for an attacking response. Duba scored a hat-trick in his side’s 3-0 win against TS Galaxy in the first round of the Carling Knockout in midweek.

He has scored six goals in seven appearances across domestic competitions this season.

Security arrangements

Security measures will be increased around FNB Stadium for the match.

Stadium Management SA has warned that fans without tickets who are found in the area will be arrested.

Supporters arriving at the venue will first undergo a visual ticket check at the exclusion zone. Only those cleared at that point will be permitted to continue into the stadium precinct.
