Eric Chelle faces Nigeria touchline dilemma as two teams play on same day

Nigeria manager Eric Chelle faces an unusual scheduling problem in November, with the Super Eagles and the country’s U23 side due to play in different countries on the same day.

Chelle was appointed to lead both teams in an effort to strengthen the connection between Nigeria’s senior squad and its Olympic prospects. However, the arrangement has left the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) needing to resolve a clash involving four important fixtures.

On 13 November, the Super Eagles are scheduled to host Tanzania in Uyo in the third round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. On the same day, Nigeria’s U23 team will play Democratic Republic of Congo at TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi in the first leg of their U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie.

The conflict will continue four days later. Nigeria’s senior side will travel to Dar es Salaam to face Tanzania, while the Olympic Eagles will host Democratic Republic of Congo at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Even with the quickest possible travel arrangements, Chelle cannot be in both dugouts. The NFF’s communications department has acknowledged the fixture overlap but has not said which team the Franco-Malian coach will lead in person.

The other side will have to be managed by an assistant or an interim coach. The scheduling issue could have been anticipated, given that all four matches fall within the same international window.

The senior team appears to be the priority. Nigeria have three points from their opening two matches in Group L, beating Madagascar 2-1 before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau.

Guinea-Bissau lead the group with six points, while Tanzania have one. Tanzania have already qualified for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as co-hosts, leaving only the best-placed nation that has not qualified automatically to join them.

A poor result in Uyo would put Nigeria in an uncomfortable position, particularly after their disappointing performance in Bissau. Being without Chelle for such a significant senior fixture would therefore be difficult to justify.

Leaving the U23 team with an assistant may be the most practical solution, but their matches are also highly significant. Their tie against Democratic Republic of Congo is a direct knockout contest that will determine whether Nigeria reach the U23 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that forms part of the qualification route for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Chelle took charge of the Olympic Eagles to oversee the next generation and bring the best U23 players closer to the senior squad. He has already shortlisted 31 players from Nigerian leagues for the two matches against Democratic Republic of Congo.

His absence from both fixtures would weaken the continuity of that project. In November, Chelle must choose between Uyo and Lubumbashi, followed by Dar es Salaam or Ikenne, meaning one of Nigeria’s two teams will face a crucial tie without its principal coach.
