Morocco’s Grand Stade Hassan II is expected to be completed in early 2028, with Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) president Fouzi Lekjaa expressing confidence that the venue can host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Lekjaa made the announcement during an interview on 2M’s “Sa’at Al Saraha” (Hour of Frankness) programme on Wednesday, 28 October, highlighting the stadium’s capacity, modern design and compliance with international safety and sustainability standards.

The stadium, which is being built in Benslimane near Casablanca, is expected to become one of the largest football venues in the world as Morocco prepares to co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal.

However, FIFA has yet to confirm the venue for the 2030 World Cup final.

Morocco targets World Cup final with Hassan II Stadium

Lekjaa identified seating capacity as one of the key considerations FIFA takes into account when selecting a stadium to host the World Cup final.

The scale of the Hassan II Stadium is expected to strengthen Morocco’s ambitions of staging the tournament’s showpiece match, although the final decision rests with FIFA.

Completion is scheduled for early 2028, leaving approximately two years for organisers to test the facility and assess its readiness before the tournament.

Several sporting events and test competitions are also expected to take place at the stadium before the World Cup. These will allow organisers to evaluate its technical and logistical operations and ensure the venue meets FIFA’s requirements.

Infrastructure projects support Morocco’s 2030 preparations

Beyond stadium construction, Morocco is pursuing wider infrastructure developments as it prepares to host the 2030 World Cup.

Lekjaa described the tournament, which will mark 100 years since the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between Africa and Europe through a joint sporting event.

In the Casablanca region, the Hassan II Stadium project forms part of a broader development plan that includes investments in high-speed rail connections, railway networks and tramway services.

The improvements are intended to enhance transport links and make the stadium more accessible to supporters, while also supporting the region’s long-term urban and economic development.

Morocco seeks lasting benefits from 2030 World Cup

Morocco hopes the tournament will attract investment and deliver lasting benefits for future generations, with preparations extending beyond the construction of sporting facilities.

The Hassan II Stadium is expected to play a central role in these plans, as the North African nation seeks to secure the right to host the 2030 World Cup final.

With completion targeted for early 2028, the venue will have a significant role in Morocco’s preparations as it works towards staging one of the biggest matches in world football.
