Pyramids FC eye second Champions League triumph

Former Al Ahly player Mohamed Abdel-Galil has identified Pyramids FC as his former club’s biggest threat, insisting he is more concerned about their title rivals than Zamalek.

Pyramids have made an impressive start to the Egyptian Premier League season, winning all seven of their opening matches to collect 21 points and move to the top of the standings.

The New Cairo-based club hold a two-point lead over second-placed Zamalek, who have a game in hand, while Al Ahly sit third on 17 points, also with a match in hand over the White Knights.

With Pyramids maintaining their winning momentum, Al Ahly face a difficult challenge in their bid to keep pace with the league leaders and defend their position among the title contenders.

The two sides are scheduled to meet on November 23, a fixture Abdel-Galil believes could prove particularly significant in the title race.

Speaking on Egyptian television, according to Egypt Telegraph, the former Al Ahly player said he was confident his old club could handle Zamalek but expressed greater concern about Pyramids, who are coached by South African tactician Rulani Mokwena.

“I am not worried about Al Ahly against Zamalek, as Al Ahly is capable of beating them again, but I am worried about Al Ahly against Pyramids,” he said.

Abdel-Galil also assessed Zamalek’s prospects in the CAF Champions League after the Egyptian side were drawn in Group B alongside Tanzania’s Young Africans SC, Algeria’s MC Alger and Tunisia’s Club Africain.

He described the group as a difficult one for the Cairo-based club, suggesting that finishing second would represent a significant achievement.

“Zamalek’s group in the Champions League is difficult, and if they get second place it is as if they have won the championship, and if they succeed in qualifying it will be a very good thing,” he added.

While Al Ahly continue to pursue the league leaders, Pyramids’ unbeaten start and seven consecutive victories have put Mokwena’s side firmly in contention for the Egyptian Premier League title.
