Masilela expected to return for Orlando Pirates’ Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs
Orlando Pirates expect Simphiwe Masilela to be available for Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs after leaving the young attacking midfielder out of their Carling Knockout Cup tie with Milford FC.
Pirates secured a place in the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Milford on Tuesday evening. Their focus now turns to the Betway Premiership and a meeting with their traditional rivals this weekend.
Kaizer Chiefs will also go into the eagerly anticipated fixture after a 3-0 cup victory, having beaten TS Galaxy on the same night.
Masilela’s omission from the Pirates squad prompted questions from some supporters, particularly after his recent performances for the club. However, information from within Pirates suggests the 22-year-old was rested with the Soweto derby in mind and is expected to be available for selection.
The decision was also influenced by Masilela’s disciplinary position. He has collected three yellow cards in domestic competitions and is one booking away from a suspension.
A further caution against Milford would have ruled him out of Saturday’s high-profile clash with Chiefs.
Masilela has made 10 appearances for Pirates in domestic league and cup competitions this season. Six of those outings have come in the league, where he has scored one goal and provided one assist.
He has also featured four times in the MTN8.
His expected return would give the Buccaneers an additional option as they prepare for one of the most significant fixtures on the South African football calendar.
