Xavi Espart targets speedy return after injury in Barcelona’s El Clasico defeat

Barcelona wing-back Xavi Espart says he is determined to return to action as soon as possible after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s 2-1 El Clasico defeat by Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old was forced off in the 30th minute after hurting his right ankle while challenging Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni for the ball.

Reports have indicated that Espart has been diagnosed with a syndesmosis injury, which could keep him out for up to seven weeks.

The Spanish defender addressed the setback in a short message on Instagram, expressing his disappointment at the result while making clear that his priority was to recover quickly.

“Sad for the defeat, with only one idea in mind: to come back as soon as possible, the better. They can’t handle us. Forca Barca!” he wrote.

Espart’s injury adds to Barcelona’s recent defensive problems. Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde have both missed the past few matches because of injury, leaving the Catalan side short of options at the back.

Kounde could return for Barcelona’s next La Liga fixture, against Alaves at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Barcelona, the defending league champions, will be seeking a response after consecutive defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. They will also be aiming to preserve their lead at the top of the table.

The loss to Real Madrid came in the latest meeting between the two rivals and followed Barcelona’s defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, increasing the pressure on the champions to recover quickly in their next league match.
