Barcelona give green light to pursue Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has approved a move for Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch during the upcoming winter transfer window.

According to Sport, the Catalan club are preparing to explore a deal for the highly rated centre-back, who has emerged as one of their leading targets after making rapid progress in the Bundesliga over the past 12 months.

Barcelona are monitoring the transfer market closely for young players with exceptional potential, under the direction of sporting director Deco. Jeltsch’s performances in the Champions League this season have also attracted interest from several leading European clubs.

Flick’s extensive knowledge of the German league has helped shape Barcelona’s interest. The German believes the 20-year-old fits his tactical approach at Spotify Camp Nou, particularly because of his ability to operate in a high defensive line.

The Barcelona manager also values Jeltsch’s pace, which allows him to recover quickly and cover space when opponents break into open areas.

Initial expectations had been that any move would be more likely to take place next summer. However, sources indicate that Barcelona could test Stuttgart’s resolve by making an approach when the winter transfer window opens.

A mid-season transfer is expected to be difficult to complete. Stuttgart are understood to be likely to demand about 60 million euros, equivalent to £50.3m, for one of their most important players.

Barcelona would face competition if they cannot meet that valuation. Liverpool and Real Madrid are both reportedly prepared to make their own moves for the promising defender.

Real Madrid are actively seeking defensive reinforcements after accepting that Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao can no longer be regarded as dependable long-term options.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are believed to see Jeltsch as an important part of their plans for the next stage of the squad’s development. Manager Andoni Iraola reportedly considers the defender a key target as the club look to plan for the future.

The English club are said to be willing to meet Stuttgart’s financial demands as they search for a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
