Bayern Munich tracking Borussia Monchengladbach’s teenage Moroccan-German breakthrough star

Wael Mahya has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s most closely watched young players, with Bayern Munich among four leading clubs monitoring the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.

The 17-year-old, who has Moroccan heritage, played a decisive role in Monchengladbach’s first victory of the season on Friday, scoring once and setting up Shuto Machino in a 3-2 win over Stuttgart.

It was a significant result for Alexander Blessin’s side, who had started the campaign with six consecutive defeats and were bottom of the Bundesliga. Mahya’s contribution took his tally to three goals and one assist in eight appearances this season.

His performances have established him as a central figure in the team despite his age, suggesting this could be the campaign in which he makes his major breakthrough.

Record-breaking teenager

Mahya joined Borussia Monchengladbach when he was eight and has developed a reputation within the club for his technical quality, low centre of gravity, close control and ability to use both sides of his game effectively.

His composure and efficiency have also impressed the club’s staff. At 16 years, nine months and 28 days, he became the youngest player in Borussia Monchengladbach’s first-team history.

Last season, Mahya was used mainly as a valued substitute, scoring twice and providing one assist in 17 matches. He has since taken on a much more prominent role.

“He is fulfilling his role as one of Borussia Monchengladbach’s leading emerging talents perfectly,” sporting director Rouven Schroder said.

“He has excellent character, comes from a wonderful family and, of course, we are watching closely how he deals with this situation. We are not worried. He is a role model for everyone who comes after him and shows them how to remain humble.”

Monchengladbach are now seeking to extend Mahya’s contract, which is due to expire in June 2028.

Four Bundesliga clubs interested

Schroder acknowledged that the club may eventually have to consider a major transfer.

“We are in contact with him, his parents and his agent. Wael is completely calm and, if you like, sees himself as a promising young talent,” he said.

“But one thing is clear: he will not play at Borussia Monchengladbach all his life. There is no avoiding generating transfer revenue. That is not always what the fans want to hear.”

According to Sky Sport Germany, Bayern Munich are particularly interested in Mahya. Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are also understood to be following the teenager.

A move during the winter transfer window is considered unlikely, but Mahya could become one of the prominent names in the summer market.

Germany Under-21s are also hoping to secure his international future, while Morocco have been attempting to persuade him for several months. In an interview with Kicker in March, Mahya said: “Yes, there has been contact, but I cannot say any more. I have not made a decision yet and am taking my time.”
