Ilyes Hamache is pressing his case for an Algeria call-up for the November international break after making an impressive start to the season with Cambuur.
The 23-year-old Franco-Algerian winger was again influential on Saturday as Cambuur defeated Willem II 6-1. He doubled his side’s advantage with a composed chip after running on to a through ball, then supplied the assist for their fourth goal.
That performance took Hamache’s Eredivisie return to five goals and two assists. He has scored in consecutive matches, having also found the net against AZ Alkmaar, giving him seven goal contributions in 10 appearances.
Those figures are increasingly difficult for Brahim Hemdani to overlook with the November squad announcement approaching.
Hamache’s current form also represents a revival after his progress had stalled. He emerged at a young age with Valenciennes before moving to Schalke 04, where he was unable to establish himself. A loan spell at Amiens brought more playing time, although his output there did not match the level he is now producing at Cambuur.
A right-footed player who normally starts on the left, Hamache often moves inside to shoot or combine with team-mates. His pace, changes of speed and ability to run in behind also allow him to operate on the right or behind a centre-forward.
He believes his defensive work-rate could offer an additional benefit. That flexibility may appeal to Hemdani, although competition for attacking places remains strong.
Mohamed Amoura is regarded as the leading option on the left, while Adil Boulbina enhanced his claims during the most recent international break. Ilan Kebbal is another player capable of covering several attacking positions.
Hamache is therefore not guaranteed a place in the next squad and is even less certain to alter the existing pecking order immediately. However, his current performances have made him a serious candidate for consideration as Hemdani continues to build his team and look for more attacking options.
His desire to represent Algeria is longstanding. He was approached by Algeria Under-19s while at Valenciennes but chose to wait in the hope of earning a direct call-up to the senior team. He later played in a friendly for France Under-20s in November 2022, an appearance which did not end his eligibility to play for the Fennecs.
Hamache has recently restated his ambition to play for Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. There has been no indication so far of whether he has received a provisional call-up.
For now, though, his strongest argument is being made on the pitch: seven decisive contributions in 10 matches.
