Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea, despite mounting pressure after a damaging start to the season.
Sources have told the BBC that Carrick, 45, has been given the opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around when Manchester United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 31 October 2026.
The former Middlesbrough manager took training on Tuesday as United prepared for the match, with the club attempting to end a run of eight consecutive games without a victory in all competitions.
Carrick’s position came under serious scrutiny after Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The defeat left the club 17th in the Premier League, just one place above the relegation zone.
The result prompted Manchester United’s leadership to consider whether Carrick should be dismissed and replaced. Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United manager, and Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany head coach, were among the potential candidates discussed.
However, sources have confirmed to the BBC that Carrick will lead the side against Chelsea and will be given further time to improve results and restore Manchester United’s form.
The meeting at Stamford Bridge represents the next test for Carrick as United seek to halt their winless run and move away from danger in the Premier League.
