Harry Kane thanked Jose Mourinho and the other managers who helped shape his career after becoming the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
The Bayern Munich forward paid tribute to his former coaches during his speech at the London Palladium, after collecting the 2026 award.
“I want to thank some of the coaches who have helped me throughout my journey, and if I have forgotten anyone, I am deeply sorry,” said England captain Kane.
His list included Harry Redknapp, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Mourinho, who managed him during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.
“Each of you played an important role in my development at different stages of my life,” Kane added. “Without every one of you, I would not be standing here today.”
He continued: “I learned a lot, and when you surround yourself with the best people and coaches, it makes you a better person and a better player. Thank you very much.”
Kane has previously spoken positively about his relationship with Mourinho, saying he produced some of the best performances of his career while working under the Portuguese manager.
Mourinho coached Kane at Tottenham between 2019 and 2021. During that period, the England striker combined his goalscoring with a growing contribution in creating chances before continuing his professional career with Bayern Munich.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner also stressed that his success was the result of a long and difficult journey rather than an easy rise to the top.
“My journey was not easy or straightforward,” Kane said. “I was not the child who went straight to the top. I had to go through difficult moments, and I experienced many loan spells and moves.
“I had to fight to reach the best level I am producing now, and I hope my journey can inspire others as well.”
