Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or setback revives memories of Vinicius defeat

Kylian Mbappe’s narrow loss to Harry Kane in the 2026 Ballon d’Or has drawn comparisons with Vinicius Junior’s disappointment two years earlier, when the Real Madrid forward was beaten by Rodri by 41 points.

The two results underline the psychological difficulty of missing out on football’s most prestigious individual award when the vote is decided by a fine margin. In both cases, the defeated player had appeared to be a serious contender before the final points went elsewhere.

Vinicius’ 2024 defeat provoked particularly strong debate because of the season he had enjoyed with Real Madrid, helping the club win both La Liga and the Champions League. The controversy intensified when Vinicius and the Real Madrid delegation did not attend the ceremony after the club received indications that he would not win.

That absence turned the result into more than a personal disappointment, prompting wider discussion about the relationship between the club and the award, as well as how the outcome had been handled.

Two years later, the outcome was different but the contest was reportedly even closer. Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with Mbappe finishing second and Lamine Yamal third.

Vincent Garcia, editor-in-chief of France Football, said the battle between Kane and Mbappe was tighter than the 2024 contest between Rodri and Vinicius, which ended with a 41-point gap. Garcia also said Mbappe led the voting for a long period before Kane moved ahead during the closing stages.

The reaction at the ceremony provided another point of comparison. Mbappe and Yamal both appeared surprised and disappointed as the result was announced. Unlike Vinicius in 2024, however, Mbappe attended the 2026 event despite losing to Kane.

Attendance alone cannot establish how either player felt about the result. Equally, a brief expression captured by television cameras cannot reveal a player’s state of mind. Different considerations may have influenced Vinicius’ decision to stay away, while Mbappe’s presence does not necessarily mean he accepted the defeat more easily.

Vinicius’ form has remained under scrutiny since his loss to Rodri, with continuing criticism of his performances and influence at Real Madrid compared with the seasons before the award. That has led to repeated questions over whether the defeat had a lasting psychological effect.

There is no clear evidence that a Ballon d’Or loss caused any subsequent decline. Performance in football is shaped by technical, physical and tactical factors, alongside the circumstances affecting both player and team. A sequence of events does not, by itself, prove that one caused the other.

Mbappe may have the experience and competitive character to recover more quickly, having dealt with intense expectations at club and international level. But his mental resilience will be judged by his performances in the months ahead, not by his appearance at the ceremony or his reaction in front of the cameras.

With further opportunities to challenge for the award, Mbappe’s response will determine whether the 2026 defeat becomes a burden or an incentive. The significance of the setback will be measured by what follows it, rather than by the disappointment of the night itself.
