Inzaghi calls for maximum focus as Al Hilal face Mahrez’s Al Shamal

Al Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi has warned his side they will need to be fully focused when they face Al Shamal in the third round of the AFC Champions League Elite on 27 October 2026.

The Saudi club will come up against Riyad Mahrez, the former Al Ahly Saudi player who now represents Al Shamal. Inzaghi praised the Algeria international but also highlighted the quality within the Qatari side, including Spanish defender Pablo Mari.

“Riyad Mahrez is a great star, and Al Shamal have a number of excellent players such as Pablo Mari and others,” Inzaghi said at his pre-match news conference.

“We will make every effort to do what is required.”

Inzaghi wary of organised Al Shamal

The Italian stressed that Al Shamal should not be regarded as an easy opponent, pointing to the strength of their squad and coaching staff as well as the organisation they have shown in recent matches.

“Al Shamal are a strong team with an excellent coach and outstanding players,” said Inzaghi.

“That is why we must be present and focused during the match. I watched their last game and they are an organised team.”

The fixture presents another test for Al Hilal as they manage a congested schedule and attempt to maintain their progress in the competition. Inzaghi said the club’s staff were paying close attention to the players’ physical condition, with recovery particularly important during a run of successive matches.

“Recovery is important, especially with the pressure of the fixtures,” he said. “We are working hand in hand with the medical staff to keep up with the demands of the matches ahead.”

Al Hilal assess player availability

Inzaghi also provided an update on several players before the game. Martinelli’s fitness remains a concern following Al Hilal’s previous match against Al Qadsiah, while Mohamed Al-Mahzari has needed time to rest.

Ruben Neves will miss the meeting with Al Shamal, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s availability will be decided after training.

The Al Hilal manager added that the team were already considering their next fixture against Al Fateh. That planning, he said, made it important to manage the players’ physical condition carefully and avoid the effects of accumulated fatigue as the club continues its campaign.
