Hansi Flick’s attacking philosophy has become a potential weakness for Barcelona after Real Madrid exploited the space behind their defence in a 2-1 Clasico victory at Camp Nou.
Kylian Mbappe scored for the visitors as Real Madrid reduced the gap to Barcelona to three points, highlighting the risks created by the hosts’ aggressive pressing and forward movement.
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s decision to press high often leaves significant room behind the back line. Opponents have repeatedly targeted those areas with quick counter-attacks, raising questions over whether Flick’s side can maintain its attacking effectiveness while providing greater defensive protection.
The defeat by Real Madrid was not an isolated example. Paris Saint-Germain also took advantage of similar weaknesses in a 4-2 victory, while Barcelona struggled against Atletico Madrid after conceding a late goal by Alexander Sørloth in December 2024.
That fixture also exposed the same problem in the Copa del Rey in February 2025, when the two sides played out an entertaining 4-4 draw.
Barcelona’s difficulties have also been evident in the Champions League. Against Inter Milan during the 2024-2025 season, they conceded an equaliser in added time before losing the tie in extra time.
The pattern resurfaced against Paris Saint-Germain in October 2025, when Goncalo Ramos scored a late goal in the 90th minute. Barcelona also faced problems in their European meeting with Atletico Madrid during the 2025-2026 season.
Those results suggest the issue is part of a recurring pattern rather than the consequence of one poor performance. Barcelona can leave themselves particularly exposed in the closing stages, when they push forward in search of a goal or attempt to sustain pressure on their opponents.
Rodri Hernandez had praised Barcelona’s attacking strength after their 5-2 win over Real Betis, but also pointed to the number of goals the team had been conceding.
Flick therefore faces the task of preserving Barcelona’s attacking threat while improving defensive cover and reducing the danger posed by counter-attacks.
Barcelona are listed to face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, while Racing Santander and Real Madrid are listed for La Liga fixtures on 1 November 2026.
