Barcelona’s bright start tested as PSG and Real Madrid reveal weaknesses

Barcelona’s 10-match winning run has come under scrutiny after consecutive defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid exposed concerns over the team’s attacking threat in the biggest moments.

The Catalan side had built considerable momentum since the start of the season, but the two high-profile losses have taken some of the shine off that progress. Analysts have questioned whether Barcelona’s impressive results and eye-catching performances had created an exaggerated impression of their true level.

The latest criticism was discussed on After Foot, broadcast by French network RMC Sport, where the team’s recent displays were described as disappointing. Despite having several players capable of deciding matches, Barcelona did not produce their usual attacking impact when it mattered most against either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid.

Journalist Edgar Groliu said the performances had left him feeling as though he had been misled by the image Barcelona created earlier in the campaign. He pointed to the exceptional impression made by the team’s attacking style and the individual ability of players such as Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, but said they had failed to meet expectations in the most important tests.

Daniel Riolo also argued that Barcelona’s emphatic victories and attractive goals could lead observers to overestimate the side’s quality. In his view, the way the team plays can make it more difficult to assess its level accurately, with the results and style sometimes creating a stronger impression than the performances in demanding matches justify.

Yamal’s recent form has become a particular source of concern. He scored against Paris Saint-Germain, but found it difficult to influence either of the two matches after being closely monitored by the opposition.

In the Champions League, Lucas Hernandez was assigned to limit Yamal’s influence, while Marc Cucurella took on a similar role for Real Madrid in the Clasico. The teenager’s difficulty in producing his usual performance when opponents use individual marking has prompted further discussion about how he will respond as his career develops.

Jean-Louis Tour said Yamal’s inability to perform at his customary level under strict man-marking could become a problem for Barcelona. However, he also regarded that challenge as part of the player’s development rather than a definitive judgement on his ability.

Barcelona’s back-to-back defeats have therefore raised questions, but it remains too early to reach a final verdict on their season. The club still lead La Liga and are aiming to continue their campaign in the Champions League.
