Real Madrid overturned the pre-match expectations to beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou and claim the first Clasico of the season. Kylian Mbappe scored both goals as the visitors produced a deserved victory that moved them firmly back into contention for the La Liga title.
The result stunned Barcelona supporters, many of whom had been celebrating before kick-off and viewed their side as favourites. Analysts on the Spanish radio programme El Larguero, broadcast by Cadena SER, said Real Madrid’s performance had been built around three key qualities: solidarity, balance and courage.
“Barcelona fans were celebrating before the game, but beating Real Madrid in October requires a great deal of effort,” said analyst Antonio Romero.
“Alongside their quality, teamwork and decisive finishing, Real Madrid played attractive football and, at times, were superior to Barcelona. They won because of their cohesion and because they used technically gifted players in midfield.”
Real Madrid’s collective strength
Jesus Gallego agreed that the team’s togetherness had been central to the victory, particularly because it was an aspect Real Madrid had lacked for a long time.
“Real Madrid won because they showed balance and solidarity, which was something the team had been missing,” he said. “Everyone defended, and that was clear. Diomande defended more today than Vinicius has defended in the whole league.”
Julio Pulido said, however, that focusing only on the team’s collective effort would overlook the quality of their football.
“The secret was that they played excellent football and stopped Barcelona from producing a good performance,” he said. “With Bernardo and Guler on the pitch, they play better.”
Pulido added: “This team is more cohesive and balanced when Vinicius is not playing. Mourinho must learn from this match because this is the best way forward.”
Mourinho wins tactical battle
The programme’s analysts were united in viewing the match as a major success for Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, who they believed had outmanoeuvred Barcelona boss Hansi Flick tactically.
“Mourinho outplayed Flick and surprised us all. He completely got the better of him,” said Romero.
Antoni Miana added: “He won at Camp Nou by planting seeds of doubt in the minds of Barcelona’s players. In the end, this was Mourinho’s Clasico. He won it with his substitutions, his starting line-up and his courage.”
Criticism of Flick’s game management
Flick was criticised for failing to manage the match after Barcelona levelled, with analysts arguing that his decisions allowed Real Madrid to return to the title race.
“Almost everyone considered Barcelona the favourites, but they lacked character,” said Jordi Marti. “Pedri, Rodri and Fermin lost the ball frequently because Real Madrid worked extremely hard and made the game difficult for them. You have to know how to compete for the full 90 minutes.”
Luis Flaquer agreed: “Managing the different situations in matches better does not appear to be part of Flick’s plan. This has been happening for three years. They not only allowed Real Madrid to move within six points, but have now opened the door for them to return to the title race.”
Talavera said Barcelona had been prevented from playing at their best by Real Madrid. “When you realise you cannot win a match, you must not lose it,” he said. “Flick has not learned from his mistakes. He lost because he did not know how to preserve the draw.”
Marcos Lopez concluded: “Flick does not know how to manage a result, which shows a lack of maturity. Neither Raphinha nor Lamine Yamal took responsibility.”
