Moroccan Sensation Yassir Zabiri matches Lamine Yamal’s goal tally in La Liga
Moroccan forward Yassir Zabiri continued his impressive start to the La Liga season by scoring the winner in Racing Santander’s 2-1 comeback victory over Espanyol, prompting his coach to predict a lasting impact on Spanish football.
The 21-year-old struck in the 84th minute on Saturday to complete Santander’s comeback, taking his tally to eight goals in 10 league appearances this season.
Racing Santander coach José Alberto Lopez was full of praise for the Moroccan international after the match, highlighting his potential to become a defining figure in the game.
“We have to enjoy watching him because he’s going to define an era,” the coach said, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
Zabiri Completes Santander Comeback
Santander had to fight back after Edu Exposito put Espanyol ahead in the 62nd minute at El Sardinero.
Jeanuel Belocian restored parity seven minutes later before Zabiri delivered the decisive moment six minutes from time.
The Moroccan forward capitalised on a corner taken by Pablo García to score the winning goal and secure all three points for the hosts.
The victory gave Santander their third league win of the season and extended their unbeaten home record.
Racing Coach Urges Patience With Moroccan Forward
Despite Zabiri’s impressive scoring record, José Alberto has called for patience as the young forward continues his development.
According to Galerna Press, the coach praised the Moroccan’s commitment to the team, describing him as a player who works hard for his teammates and has the ability to make a difference in any situation.
His contribution has extended beyond goals, with his performances quickly establishing him as one of Santander’s most important attacking players.
From Morocco’s Mohammed VI Academy to La Liga
Zabiri joined Santander in July on a season-long loan from French club Rennes. The agreement runs until June 2027 and does not include an option to buy.
The forward developed at Morocco’s Mohammed VI Football Academy before making his mark on the international stage with the country’s Under-20 side.
He played a key role in Morocco’s triumph at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, scoring twice in the final against Argentina as the North African nation lifted the trophy.
His progress in Spain is adding to the growing recognition of Moroccan talent in European football.
Moroccan Star Faces Real Madrid Test
Zabiri’s eight goals have placed him alongside Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal among La Liga’s leading scorers, with only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé ahead of them by one goal.
The Moroccan forward will have another opportunity to demonstrate his ability when Santander travel to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid on 1 November.
After his latest decisive contribution, Zabiri will be looking to maintain his scoring form against one of Spanish football’s biggest clubs.
