Marseille weigh another loan move for Faris Moumbagna

Olympique de Marseille are working on a solution for Faris Moumbagna, with the Cameroon international expected to leave the club either on loan or in a permanent transfer in the coming weeks.

The 26-year-old striker was left out of Marseille’s squad for their Champions League defeat by Austrian club Sturm Graz, as the club continue to manage players who no longer form part of their plans.

According to reports from Ouest-France, Marseille are actively seeking to move Moumbagna on after making major changes to their squad during the last transfer window. The club parted company with several senior players and are now focusing on finding departures for those considered surplus to requirements.

Moumbagna joined Marseille in January 2024 for €8m, but his time at the club has so far proved a disappointment for the recruitment department. Marseille had already been unable to find a buyer for him during the summer transfer window, while his return from a loan spell at Cremonese has done little to improve his sporting position.

The striker’s contribution this season has been limited to six appearances in all competitions. He has not started a match, has scored no goals and has provided one assist, which came in a victory at Troyes.

His involvement in the league has been even more restricted. The Cameroon international has played only 17 minutes across five matches.

Moumbagna remains under contract with Marseille until June 2028, but the club are now expected to pursue another loan arrangement. A permanent sale at a reduced price is also possible, although that would represent a significant loss compared with Marseille’s initial investment.

His current estimated value is €3.5m.

Marseille’s next fixture is their eighth match of the French championship, against Le Havre AC. Moumbagna’s omission from the squad for the meeting with Sturm Graz further underlined the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.

A new temporary move would allow Marseille to reduce the size of their squad while giving the striker an opportunity to revive his career away from the south coast. A sale, however, would bring a definitive end to a spell that has failed to deliver the expected return on the €8m fee paid in 2024.
