Kaizer Chiefs throw support behind Fernando Da Cruz despite double cup heartbreak
Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has reaffirmed the club’s backing for head coach Fernando Da Cruz despite the Frenchman overseeing early exits from two cup competitions, insisting the technical team retains their confidence as they pursue long-term success.
Da Cruz has come under scrutiny following Amakhosi’s elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup on Friday evening, adding to their earlier disappointment in the MTN8.
However, Motaung has moved to quell uncertainty surrounding the coach’s future, publicly expressing the club’s trust in Da Cruz and his technical team despite the disappointing results.
Motaung delivers strong message of support
In a statement, the Chiefs sporting director stressed that the club remained committed to the direction being pursued by the coaching team, particularly their efforts to establish a consistent football philosophy and development pathway.
“As a Club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” the statement read.
“They continue to have our trust as they lead the implementation of a football philosophy and development pathway that we firmly believe will bring sustainable success.
“Their professionalism, work ethic, and commitment to improving the team every day remain irreproachable.”
Motaung also acknowledged the challenges facing the team, pointing to the effort shown by the players despite their latest setback and the injuries affecting the squad.
“The team is fighting hard every game to uphold a high standard of performance, and yesterday, despite the result and the injuries we carry, that warrior spirit was visible on the field,” he added.
The public endorsement represents a significant show of confidence in Da Cruz as pressure mounts following the club’s inability to progress in either of the two cup competitions.
Da Cruz faces scrutiny after cup setbacks
Motaung announced Da Cruz’s appointment in June after Kaizer Chiefs parted ways with Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
The Frenchman arrived with the responsibility of guiding the Soweto giants towards greater consistency and success, but his tenure has already encountered difficulties in knockout football.
Chiefs were eliminated from the MTN8 before suffering another early exit in the CAF Confederation Cup, leaving them with two cup disappointments to address as the season progresses.
The latest setback is likely to intensify scrutiny of Da Cruz, given the expectations surrounding one of South Africa’s most prominent clubs.
Chiefs supporters will be eager to see an improvement in results after the team failed to make meaningful progress in either competition.
Motaung’s statement, however, suggests that the club’s leadership remains focused on its longer-term plans rather than making an immediate change in the technical area.
His emphasis on professionalism, work ethic and the implementation of a football philosophy indicates that the club believes continuity is important to achieving its objectives.
Betway Premiership offers chance to respond
Despite their cup disappointments, Kaizer Chiefs remain fourth in the Betway Premiership after eight matches.
Their position in the league gives Da Cruz an opportunity to redirect the team’s attention towards domestic competition and deliver results that could ease the growing pressure.
The coach will now be expected to turn the backing of the club’s hierarchy into improved performances as Amakhosi attempt to regain momentum.
With two cup competitions already behind them, consistency in the league will be crucial to keeping their campaign on track.
