Oumar Diakite strikes again as Sturm Graz beat Marseille in Europa League

Oumar Diakite continued his impressive run of form by scoring the only goal as Sturm Graz defeated Olympique de Marseille 1-0 on Thursday 22 October in the third round of the Europa League.

The Ivory Coast forward’s decisive finish secured a valuable European victory for the Austrian side, just four days after he had scored a hat-trick in the Austrian league.

Diakite has emerged as the difference-maker for Sturm Graz during a highly productive spell. In a closely contested match against Marseille, where a single chance was always likely to prove decisive, the 22-year-old provided the moment that settled the game.

The former Stade de Reims player once again showed his composure in front of goal and his ability to influence important matches. His strike gave Sturm Graz a significant result in the Europa League and extended his recent sequence of decisive performances.

Hat-trick preceded Marseille winner

Diakite had already made a major impact in the league during Sunday’s Graz derby against Grazer AK. He scored three times in Sturm Graz’s emphatic 6-1 victory, finding the net in the 41st, 49th and 51st minutes.

That display underlined his sharpness and suggested the striker was returning to his best form. Four days later, he maintained that momentum against Marseille by producing another match-winning contribution.

The Ivory Coast international now appears to have established himself as one of the key figures in Sturm Graz’s attack. His goals have arrived at an important stage for a player whose confidence has grown rapidly over the past week.

Diakite rebuilding momentum

The goal against Olympique de Marseille adds to the evidence that Diakite has rediscovered his effectiveness after a more difficult period. Before the European fixture, he had already scored six goals in the league.

Those performances had provided encouraging signs, and his latest effort further strengthened the impression that his confidence is returning. At 22, Diakite is beginning to reproduce the level that made him such an influential attacking player for his club.

His consecutive displays against Grazer AK and Marseille represent a strong response and offer Sturm Graz another reliable source of goals. The next challenge will be to sustain that level across the remainder of the league campaign and in European competition.
