Motsepe to chair CAF EXCO meeting as AFCON bidding process tops agenda
Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Dr Patrice Motsepe will chair a virtual meeting of the organisation’s Executive Committee on Thursday, October 22, with preparations for major continental competitions and events expected to feature prominently on the agenda.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 14:00 GMT and will bring together members of CAF’s Executive Committee to discuss key issues concerning the administration and development of football across Africa.
One of the major items for discussion is preparations for the CAF Ordinary General Assembly, which is scheduled to take place in Nigeria on November 21.
The assembly is expected to provide an important platform for CAF officials and member associations to deliberate on matters affecting the continent’s football governing body and review key organisational priorities.
The committee will also discuss arrangements for the CAF Super Cup final, scheduled to be held in South Africa on November 8.
The annual fixture brings together the winners of Africa’s premier club competitions and provides an opportunity for the continent’s leading sides to compete for another major trophy.
Preparations for the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal are also expected to feature during the virtual meeting, as the governing body continues its work on organising competitions across different forms of the game.
Another key item on the agenda is the CAF Awards, which are scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 7.
The awards ceremony recognises outstanding achievements in African football, with players, coaches, teams and other stakeholders honoured for their performances and contributions to the sport.
However, the bidding process for future editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is expected to be among the significant issues discussed by the Executive Committee.
The AFCON remains the continent’s flagship international football tournament, attracting considerable interest from prospective host nations and serving as a major platform for showcasing African football.
Discussions on the bidding process could provide further insight into CAF’s plans for the competition and the arrangements surrounding the selection of future hosts.
The Executive Committee is also expected to consider other matters relating to the organisation and administration of the AFCON, alongside additional issues requiring its attention.
The meeting comes as CAF continues to oversee preparations for several major events on its calendar, with the governing body balancing competition organisation, institutional responsibilities and the long-term development of football across the continent.
Further details on decisions taken during the meeting are expected to emerge following its conclusion.
