Lyon rule out Karim Benzema return despite speculation over reunion
Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has dismissed speculation linking former Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema with a return to his boyhood club, insisting the proposed move was never close to becoming a reality.
The 38-year-old striker, who began his professional career at Lyon before joining Real Madrid in 2009, had been the subject of intense discussion on social media over a possible reunion with the French club.
However, Louis-Jean said the rumours were largely speculation and that a deal had not been feasible.
Lyon dismiss Benzema speculation
Speaking to France TV, Louis-Jean explained that contractual complications surrounding Benzema’s situation in Saudi Arabia had presented obstacles to a potential move.
“Benzema, was it close?” No, it wasn’t close to becoming reality. Of course, like you, I heard what was said on social media. I know there was a problem getting out of his contract in Saudi Arabia, but no, it was more noise than reality. I don’t believe it was feasible in any way
Despite Benzema’s history with Lyon, structural and financial complications prevented the proposed return from making significant progress.
The striker is now without a club following the termination of his contract in Saudi Arabia, but contractual restrictions have continued to complicate the prospect of a comeback.
Lyon look towards January window
With a return for Benzema ruled out, Lyon are turning their attention towards strengthening their attack during the January transfer window.
The French club have Panathinaikos striker Elmin Rastoder in their sights as they consider their options for the second half of the season.
