AC Milan are considering bringing Zachary Athekame back from his loan at Olympique Lyonnais during the winter transfer window, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Swiss right-back has impressed since moving to Lyon and has quickly become an important part of Paulo Fonseca’s side. Discussions between the two clubs have reportedly begun, although no agreement has been reached.
Athekame joined Olympique Lyonnais on a loan deal without an option to buy. The 21-year-old has made a strong start to his time in France, scoring two goals and providing three assists in seven Ligue 1 appearances.
His form has prompted AC Milan to reassess their options on the right side of defence. The Italian club are looking to strengthen that position, where some of their current alternatives are not specialists in the full-back role.
Any decision to end the loan early would require the approval of Olympique Lyonnais. The French club could also seek compensation for losing the player before the scheduled end of his temporary move.
Those conditions mean the proposed return remains uncertain despite the discussions already under way. The situation is expected to become clearer over the coming weeks as the January transfer window approaches.
Athekame, who is of Nigerian origin, has previously spoken of his attachment to Milan and his desire to return to the club. He remains under contract with AC Milan until 30 June 2030, while his market value is estimated at 15 million euros.
The defender’s progress at Lyon comes ahead of the club’s forthcoming meeting with AC Milan. Bournemouth are due to play AC Milan in their third match of the league phase of the Europa League.
The match is also being assessed by the betting company 1xbet, which lists Bournemouth at 2.00 to win, a draw at 3.50 and an AC Milan victory at 2.95.
