Rio Ngumoha: Liverpool’s teenage winger making history on the club and international stages
At 18, Rio Ngumoha is emerging as one of Liverpool’s most exciting young players. The English winger of Nigerian descent has built a reputation for his pace, direct running and ability to influence important moments, while setting records in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Ngumoha has also forced his way into the England set-up, underlining the rapid progress he has made since leaving Chelsea. Here are three key points about the Liverpool forward.
A record-breaker for Liverpool
Ngumoha made an immediate mark in August 2025 when he became Liverpool’s youngest Premier League goalscorer.
He was 16 years and 361 days old when he scored in the 100th minute against Newcastle, completing a dramatic 3-2 victory. The goal secured his place in the club’s record books and highlighted his composure in a decisive moment.
He added another landmark in the Champions League against Villarreal. Ngumoha provided two assists as Liverpool came from behind to win 4-3, earning the UEFA Player of the Match award.
That performance also made him Liverpool’s youngest-ever assist provider in the competition.
The Chelsea move that caused frustration
Before joining Liverpool, Ngumoha spent several years at Chelsea, having entered the club’s academy at the age of eight.
He chose to end that association in the summer of 2024, declining to extend his stay with the Blues before moving to Liverpool. The opportunity to reach first-team football more quickly is understood to have been an important factor in his decision.
The transfer took place without a fee, a development that frustrated Chelsea. The club regarded Ngumoha as a player with exceptional potential, but Liverpool succeeded in securing the services of a highly sought-after prospect.
His early performances have since begun to justify the confidence placed in him by the Reds.
Three England appearances
Ngumoha’s development has continued beyond club football. Comfortable on either flank, he has also made significant progress with England.
In June 2026, aged 17, he made his senior international debut in a friendly against New Zealand. He has now made three appearances for the Three Lions, marking an important step in a career still at an early stage.
Ngumoha is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, but the club’s hierarchy want to offer him a new deal to secure his future. Transfermarkt estimates his market value at 50 million euros.
Liverpool view the winger as a long-term asset and are keen to retain him as his profile continues to rise. The club’s next Premier League fixture is against Brighton, with Ngumoha part of a young group expected to contribute to Liverpool’s future.
