Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma faces uncertain future as Renaldo Leaner rises

Bruce Bvuma’s position at Kaizer Chiefs is under growing scrutiny after Renaldo Leaner took his opportunity as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper.

The 31-year-old is now facing an uncertain battle to preserve his career at Naturena, despite Kaizer Chiefs recently extending his contract by activating a one-year option.

Bvuma originally signed a two-year contract extension in February 2024, with the agreement due to expire in June 2026. The club’s decision to trigger the additional year means his deal will now officially run until June 2027.

However, the extension has not removed questions over his role under coach Fernando Da Cruz and the current technical team. Bvuma’s place in the goalkeeping hierarchy appears increasingly vulnerable, with Brandon Petersen established as the first-choice goalkeeper and Leaner now providing his cover.

Bvuma’s progress stalls

Bvuma has struggled to repay the confidence placed in him by the Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy since earning promotion to the top flight.

He was once viewed as the likely long-term successor to club legend Itumeleng Khune, but his progress has slowed considerably in recent seasons.

The 2024/25 campaign was the most productive of his career in terms of league involvement, with Bvuma making 19 appearances. His opportunities have reduced sharply this season, when he has played only five times.

That limited involvement has prevented him from securing a regular place between the posts, while Leaner has moved ahead of him in the selection order.

Leaner has made the most of his recent chances, featuring in eight matches and strengthening his claim to be Petersen’s deputy. The contrast in their appearances has added to the uncertainty surrounding Bvuma’s status at the club.

With the season approaching its halfway point, Kaizer Chiefs and Bvuma are now faced with a difficult decision over his future and role within the squad. The goalkeeper is also entering the final six months of the original period covered by his contract, before the recently activated option extends the agreement through June 2027.

Bvuma remains tied to the Soweto club, but his contract security has not translated into certainty over his place in the team.
