Julian Alvarez scores first Atletico Madrid goal of season in draw at Stuttgart

Julian Alvarez opened his Atletico Madrid account for the season as his side drew 1-1 with Stuttgart in the Champions League league phase.

Stuttgart move on to seven points from their first three matches, while Atletico Madrid have four.

The German side made the stronger start and nearly took the lead inside the opening minute. Jan Oblak denied Bilal El Khannouss before producing another save to keep out a powerful effort from Josha Vagnoman following a corner.

Stuttgart continued to control the early stages. Chris Fuhrich fired over the crossbar and Angelo Stiller was denied by Oblak before sending another effort narrowly wide.

Atletico’s first opportunity came in the 18th minute, when Marc Bubill headed a cross over the bar, but the hosts remained the more threatening side.

Stuttgart finally broke the deadlock shortly before half-time. Jamie Leweling’s shot from outside the penalty area took a deflection off Martin Hjulmand and changed direction on its way into the net.

Atletico attempted to respond before the interval, but David Hancko’s header from a corner went straight at Stuttgart goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow.

The visitors levelled shortly after the restart. Ademola Lookman’s cross found Alvarez, who met it first time and sent his finish into the top corner.

Atletico’s task became more difficult in the 65th minute when Hjulmand was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Stiller.

Stuttgart applied sustained pressure against the 10 men during the closing stages, but Atletico’s defence held firm to secure a point.

Fenerbahce draw with Slavia Prague

Fenerbahce were held to a 2-2 draw by Slavia Prague in the third round of the Champions League league phase.

The Turkish side made a fast start, with Oguz Aydın scoring in the fourth minute before Mason Greenwood doubled their advantage seven minutes later.

Slavia Prague responded through Lukas Provod in the 15th minute, and Cacur completed the comeback with an equaliser in the 90th minute.

The result leaves Fenerbahce with two points, while Slavia Prague claimed their first point of the league phase.

Dortmund win at Sabah

Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-1 victory away to Sabah in Azerbaijan.

Serhou Guirassy scored both of Dortmund’s goals, finding the net in the 10th and 53rd minutes.

Sabah pulled one back through Macarthy in the 39th minute, but Dortmund held on to take all three points.

The victory moves Dortmund to six points after three matches, while Sabah remain on three.
