Pyramids FC extended their perfect start under South African manager Rhulani Mokwena with a 4-1 victory over Tala’ea El Gaish in the seventh round of the league.

The result was their 11th consecutive win in all competitions and their seventh in the league, leaving them alone at the top of the table.

Mokwena has now become the first manager in Pyramids FC’s history to win each of his opening 11 matches in charge. His team have not drawn or lost a game during that run.

The South African has matched the unbeaten starts achieved by Hossam Hassan and Ramon Diaz in their first 11 matches with the club, but is the only one of the three to have won every game.

Hassan’s opening 11 matches brought six wins and five draws, while Diaz led Pyramids FC to seven victories and four draws.

Pyramids FC took control early and opened the scoring after six minutes. Muhannad Lashin converted from a corner to give the visitors the lead.

They doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko capitalised on a defensive mistake.

Tala’ea El Gaish reduced the deficit in the 34th minute, Ahmed Tarek heading a well-taken goal to make it 2-1.

Pyramids FC appeared to have restored their two-goal cushion four minutes before half-time when Youssef Obama scored. However, referee Mohamed Maarouf disallowed the goal after reviewing the incident on the video assistant referee system, ruling that Ahmed Nadeer Ben Bouali had committed a foul in the build-up.

Tala’ea El Gaish improved after the interval and pressed for an equaliser as Pyramids FC dropped deeper.

Ahmed Tarek came close to scoring again in the 50th minute, but his effort struck the crossbar. The left post then denied Tala’ea El Gaish another goal in the 64th minute as Pyramids FC held on to their lead.

The visitors eventually restored their two-goal advantage through substitute Mahmoud Saber, who struck a fine effort from outside the penalty area past goalkeeper Emad El-Sayed.

Maarouf awarded Pyramids FC a penalty in the 86th minute after another review by the video assistant referee.

Mahmoud Zalaka converted two minutes later to complete the scoring and secure Pyramids FC’s fourth goal.

Pyramids FC’s next league match is against Wadi Degla on 29 October in the eighth round.

Before then, they face Al-Merrikh Bentiu on Saturday in the second leg of the African Champions League round of 32.
