Danny Welbeck embraces leadership role in Chelsea’s young dressing room

Chelsea striker Danny Welbeck has revealed that supporting younger teammates has become a natural part of his role at Stamford Bridge, with the experienced forward eager to share the lessons he has learned throughout his career.

The 35-year-old joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer and has brought valuable experience to a squad containing several developing talents. Having played for Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton, Welbeck believes his experiences, both positive and negative, have equipped him to offer guidance to younger players.

“I have to embrace it. With my age, especially within the dressing room I’m in now, there’s a lot of younger players there. I’ve been through a lot of experiences, good and bad, and it’s only natural for me to pass on a lot of advice to the younger players,” Welbeck said.

The striker explained that teammates regularly approach him for advice, adding that he enjoys helping others rather than viewing leadership as an additional responsibility.

“There’s a lot of stuff that they come to me with questions about. I’m embracing the role, and it’s not something where I have to think, ‘I’ve got to do this, got to do that.’ It’s just natural. I just like to help people,” he added.

Welbeck also credited his existing relationships with several Chelsea players for making his transition to the club easier. Having familiar faces around the training ground helped him settle quickly into his new environment.

The England international described himself as an easygoing character who enjoys joking with younger teammates and contributing to a positive atmosphere in the dressing room.

However, he stressed that the relaxed environment changes when the team steps onto the pitch and the focus shifts to winning matches.

“I’m easygoing around the place, like to have a laugh and a joke, and I think the young lads like that. But obviously, when it gets to going on the pitch, then it’s goal time,” Welbeck concluded.

Chelsea brought Welbeck to Stamford Bridge on a two-year contract, with head coach Xabi Alonso keen to add experience to his young squad. The veteran forward’s leadership could prove important as the club continues developing its younger players while competing for major honours.
