Manchester United face Como without up to 10 senior players as injury concerns grow

Manchester United could be missing as many as 10 senior players for Wednesday evening’s UEFA Champions League meeting with Como after several notable absences from training.

Michael Carrick’s squad was without Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford during Tuesday morning’s session at Carrington, before the team’s trip to Italy.

Mainoo, Shaw and Heaven were also unavailable for the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at the weekend. Martinez featured in that match but was substituted at half-time after suffering a thigh injury.

Rashford did not leave the bench against Leeds. Carrick had explained before the game that the forward was being managed because of a knock.

“Marcus has been carrying a little bit of something so we’re managing him to a point,” said Carrick.

Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte remain absent as they continue their long-term recoveries. Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton was also not involved in the training session.

Leny Yoro is definitely ruled out of Wednesday’s match after being sent off during Manchester United’s defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital.

United will be looking to recover from that loss when they return to European action against Cesc Fabregas’ Como side.

The fixture at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, on the shores of Lake Como, will be the first competitive meeting between the clubs. UEFA approved the Italian stadium to host the match.
