Kaizer Chiefs equal unwanted PSL record after slow start to 2026/27 campaign
Kaizer Chiefs have won only three of their first 10 matches in all competitions this season, equalling their joint-lowest win rate at this stage of a PSL campaign.
The figure, recorded during the opening phase of the 2026/27 season, is the fifth time since the pandemic that Amakhosi have reached this point with the same return, according to data from OptaJabu.
Their league form has been marked by an unusually high number of draws. Kaizer Chiefs have shared the points in five of their eight Betway Premiership matches, matching their joint-highest total of draws at this stage in PSL history.
The previous occasions came in the 1999/00, 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2015/16 seasons.
Five draws from eight fixtures point to a team that has often remained competitive without turning those performances into victories. The pattern has appeared across different periods of Kaizer Chiefs’ PSL history, stretching back almost three decades.
The three wins from 10 matches include both league and cup games, offering a broader measure of the club’s start than their Betway Premiership record alone. Their early-season difficulties have therefore not been confined to one competition.
OptaJabu’s data also places the current campaign among a series of similar starts since 2020. The repetition of the statistic highlights the difficulty Kaizer Chiefs have had in building strong momentum during the early weeks of recent seasons.
The league figures provide a further historical comparison. Their five draws from the opening eight matches have previously been seen in four campaigns, each representing a different stage of the club’s PSL experience.
The 1999/00 season came during the early years of the competition. The 2005/06 and 2006/07 campaigns took place in another period of PSL football, while 2015/16 was the most recent season before the current campaign in which Kaizer Chiefs reached the same mark.
Together, the two records present a difficult statistical picture for Amakhosi: a joint-lowest number of wins after 10 matches in all competitions and a joint-highest number of draws after eight league games.
