Daryll Benlahlou scores first professional goal for Montpellier

Algerian U23 striker Daryll Benlahlou has scored his first professional goal for Montpellier after finding the net in their away match against Rodez in Ligue 2.

The 20-year-old came off the bench in the 56th minute and scored in the 76th minute, adding to Montpellier’s lead as they continued their promising start to the season.

Benlahlou joined Montpellier from Lyon during the summer transfer window and has largely featured as a substitute under head coach Zoumana Camara. However, his regular appearances from the bench are beginning to produce results as he looks to establish himself in the first team.

His goal against Rodez was another sign of his growing influence, having already contributed to Montpellier’s attack in their previous meeting with Grenoble.

Ten days earlier, Benlahlou had played a key role in Montpellier’s victory over Grenoble. Introduced in the 69th minute with his side leading 1-0, the young forward helped secure the result with a late assist.

During a counter-attack down the left flank, Benlahlou managed to find Mamadou Camara despite being surrounded by two opposing players. His pass allowed the striker to score Montpellier’s second goal in the 90th minute, sealing the result.

That contribution offered an early indication of what he could bring to the team, and he followed it up with an even more significant moment against Rodez.

Montpellier had taken the lead shortly after the interval before Benlahlou entered the match in the 56th minute. After his team added a second goal, the striker made it three in the 76th minute with an impressive individual effort.

Benlahlou won possession from an opponent approximately 25 metres from goal before driving towards the penalty area. He then produced a well-placed diagonal shot that beat the goalkeeper, leaving him with no chance of making a save.

The finish marked a personal milestone for the forward, who is seeking to turn his opportunities into a more regular role in Camara’s side.

Having arrived from Lyon only this summer, Benlahlou has been working to make an impression in French football’s second tier. His recent contributions against Grenoble and Rodez suggest he is beginning to make the most of the minutes available to him.

His first professional goal could provide further encouragement as he continues his development with Montpellier, with the Algerian U23 international aiming to build on his recent performances and earn more opportunities in the starting line-up.
