Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has been appointed vice-chairperson of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Committee.
The decision was confirmed after the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Sunday in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Jack Maluleke will continue as chairperson of the committee, with Khumalo taking on a senior role in SAFA’s football development and coaching structures.
Khumalo is one of the most respected figures in South African football, having built a distinguished playing career with Kaizer Chiefs and the national team.
The former midfielder was part of the Bafana Bafana side that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. He also represented South Africa at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Known for his creativity, technical quality and eye for goal, Khumalo became a favourite among supporters during his playing career. His influence on the domestic game has continued beyond his time on the pitch through his work as a football coach.
His experience as a former international and coach will now form part of SAFA’s efforts to strengthen the technical side of the sport and improve football development in the country.
The appointment follows changes to SAFA’s leadership after Anastasia Tsichlas, Linda Zwane and Tankiso Modipa were elected as the association’s three vice-presidents.
Their election took place at the first NEC meeting held after SAFA’s elective congress in September.
