South Africa U16s secure wins over Augsburg and Arminia Bielefeld

South Africa’s Under-16 national team recorded impressive victories over the youth sides of FC Augsburg and Arminia Bielefeld during a high-performance training camp in Germany.

The squad were invited to Germany through the Bundesliga Dream South Africa project as part of their preparations for the FIFA U15 World Cup in Azerbaijan, which begins on 24 October.

The fortnight-long programme concluded on Monday and gave the players access to the academy facilities of two leading German clubs, along with a series of competitive and cultural experiences.

FC Augsburg were the first hosts, with the South African team training at the club’s facilities before facing their Under-16 side in a friendly. The visitors won 2-0 and completed their time in Augsburg with a tour of the WWK Arena.

While in the city, the squad attended Augsburg’s Bundesliga match against record champions Bayern Munich, which finished in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

They also met Augsburg first-team players Chrislain Matsima and Juma Bah, as well as academy player Milo Adleff.

The team then travelled to Bielefeld, where they were accompanied by former South Africa internationals Delron Buckley, Sibusiso Zuma and Rowen Fernandez, all of whom previously played for Arminia Bielefeld.

South Africa produced an even stronger result in their second friendly, defeating Arminia’s Under-16 team 5-0.

The players also attended Bielefeld’s local derby against VfL Osnabruck. They watched from pitchside as the home side came from behind to win 2-1, experiencing the atmosphere around the fixture.

Molefi Ntseki, the South African Football Association’s Technical Director, said the initiative was an important part of the country’s youth development plans.

“This initiative represents a significant step forward in our commitment to youth development,” said Ntseki.

“By partnering with one of the world’s leading football leagues, we are creating meaningful international pathways for our players to grow, compete, and succeed on a global stage.”

Bundesliga Dream South Africa was created through a partnership between the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Bundesliga to identify, develop and support elite young talent in South Africa.

The programme formed part of a strategic long-term Memorandum of Understanding signed by SAFA and the Bundesliga earlier this year.

Alongside player development and high-level coaching, the partnership covers commercial strategy and sponsorship, fan engagement and brand development, media training, and technical expertise on and off the field.

The inaugural edition was designed to combine advanced technical sessions, friendly matches and cultural exchange, while supporting both the sporting development and personal growth of the players.

The camp also provided the younger members of South Africa’s squad with experience of international football environments ahead of the FIFA Under-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
