Benson Mhlongo says Themba Zwane must decide if he can still perform at the highest level

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Benson Mhlongo says Themba Zwane himself is the best person to judge whether he remains capable of performing at the highest level.

Zwane, widely known as Mshishi, has been at the centre of debate over his role at Sundowns, with questions raised about whether he should continue to be a regular starter for the Brazilians.

His place in the Bafana Bafana squad has also prompted discussion, given his limited regular playing time at club level.

Speaking on the Chillers Network Podcast, Mhlongo said Zwane’s physical condition and ability to train consistently should be considered more important than his age.

“The only person who can tell us if it’s his time is Mshishi himself. If I can train properly, I could play in the PSL now, right now. Did you ever see me sprinting?” Mhlongo said.

The 36-year-old Zwane remains one of Sundowns’ most experienced players and has been an important figure during the club’s domestic dominance over the past decade.

However, increased competition for places and uncertainty over his regular involvement have made his future role a subject of discussion among supporters and pundits.

Mhlongo also referred to Sipho Mbule, who had been regarded as a possible successor to Zwane in Sundowns’ number 10 position.

“It was Mbule, he was there to replace Zwane, to be the number 10,” he added.

The former midfielder then discussed his own disciplinary problems during his playing career, saying his experiences differed from those of players who have faced criticism over their professionalism.

“If you had to hear the stories about me, I was worse, but I came clean to say I drink. These guys who are indisciplined now didn’t come clean. I never skipped training sessions. When you don’t come to work, that’s when there’s problems,” he explained.

Mhlongo’s comments have added another view to the debate over Zwane’s continued involvement for Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.

The discussion around the national team has centred on whether players who are not regular starters for their clubs should retain their places in the Bafana Bafana squad.

For Sundowns, the issue is also linked to the club’s growing competition for positions and the demands placed on players to maintain their fitness and professionalism.

Mhlongo’s assessment was that age should not be the only factor in determining Zwane’s future. Instead, the midfielder’s training levels, physical condition and own view of his ability to continue competing should inform the decision.
