Doctor Khumalo joins SAFA technical committee as Modipa becomes vice-president

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has been appointed to the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee, which oversees the appointment of national team coaches and the development of South Africa’s football strategy.

Khumalo will serve as deputy chairperson to long-serving National Executive Committee (NEC) member and committee chairperson Jack Maluleke.

The former South Africa international played 50 matches for Bafana Bafana and scored nine goals. He was also part of the team that won the 1996 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the late Clive Barker.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan said Khumalo, widely known as “16V”, was pleased to take up the position.

“Appointed Doctor Khumalo as a vice president of SAFA’s technical committee, so you can talk to him and I spoke to him and he’s quite happy to serve on this committee of SAFA,” Jordaan said.

The SAFA NEC meeting also saw the election of the association’s vice-presidents, with most of the previous office-holders retained and Tankiso Modipa joining the leadership team as the new member.

Nastasia Tsichlas and Linda Zwane were re-elected, while Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza automatically became the fourth vice-president.

Jordaan explained that SAFA’s national elections select members of the NEC, after which three vice-presidents are chosen from that group of administrators.

“The meeting addressed various issues, first we had to deal with a question of the vice presidents we have here at the front table. You know that the elections in SAFA, you only elect national members, the national executive members and out of those members, you then elect the three vice presidents arriving out of that pool of administrators,” he said.

Jordaan identified Zwane as having completed one term and now beginning a second, while Tsichlas retained her position and Modipa became the new addition.

“We have on my left, Mr Linda Zwane who was the vice president, served one term as vice president and now on his second term.

“Natasha Tsichlas as a vice president and the new man on the block Modipa sitting next to me, so that he became the vice president as well.”

The vice-presidents were selected through an open ballot, with the voting process observed by all members and the results displayed on a screen as the votes were counted.

“The way in which we determine the vice president is by an open ballot, which was observed by all of the members and as the vote was counted it was displayed behind us on the screen,” Jordaan added.

“There’s no question that the election showed the transparency and the commitment of SAFA to deal with these matters.”
