RB Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schafer described his side’s 6-1 Bundesliga defeat by Bayern Munich as a “complete failure” after they were overwhelmed at the Allianz Arena.
Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick as Bayern produced a dominant display, with Aleksandar Pavlovic, Michael Olise and Harry Kane also getting on the scoresheet. Andrija Maksimovic scored Leipzig’s only goal in stoppage time, by which point the contest had long been decided.
“We were completely inferior in every area. We had no chance,” Schafer told Sky after the match.
“We had an exceptionally bad day and Bayern also had a good one. Accordingly, you have to say that we were actually lucky to get away with just six goals.”
Bayern controlled the game and repeatedly exposed Leipzig’s defensive weaknesses. Goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt made several important saves to prevent the hosts from extending their advantage, but Leipzig were unable to compete with Bayern’s quality for much of the match.
Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis acknowledged that his players had been comprehensively outplayed, but said the scale and manner of the defeat could not be accepted.
“You can lose here at the Allianz Arena, we know that, everyone knows that. But not like this!” he said.
Demichelis also apologised to the Leipzig supporters who had travelled to Munich by car or plane to attend the match.
“The most important thing is to apologise to our fans who travelled here by car or plane,” he added.
For Schafer, the performance highlighted the distance between Leipzig’s current level and the standard needed to compete among Europe’s elite.
“Today we saw a lesson in what it means to perform at world-class level or top level. And we have a very, very, very large amount of work ahead of us,” he said.
There is little time for Leipzig to dwell on the result. They face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, giving Demichelis an immediate opportunity to demand a response from his players.
The coach said the defeat had offered almost no encouragement and urged his squad to move on quickly.
“There aren’t many positives to take from today’s game. That’s why we have to forget everything we did here today as quickly as possible,” he said.
