Riyad Mahrez makes Al Shamal debut after long spell out of action
Riyad Mahrez says he needs time to regain his match fitness after making his first appearance for Al Shamal SC in their goalless draw against Lusail.
The former Manchester City winger came off the bench in the second half to make his debut for the Qatari club, marking his return to competitive football after a lengthy period without playing.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the match, Mahrez expressed his happiness at being back on the pitch but acknowledged that he would need time to regain his rhythm.
“It’s good, it feels good to be back on the pitch, to get that match feeling again. I hadn’t played since the World Cup, so I need to get back into the rhythm, I still need a little time, but it’s good to be back with the team, to find my rhythm. We tried to win, but it wasn’t easy. At least we didn’t lose.”
The Algeria international’s appearance was an important step as he begins his time with Al Shamal. However, the 34-year-old made it clear that he does not intend to rush his return to regular action.
Mahrez admitted that he had been eager to play again and contribute to his new team’s performances. Despite that desire, he stressed the importance of building up his playing time gradually rather than putting unnecessary pressure on his recovery.
“It’s been a long time. I wanted to play, I wanted to participate, to help the team. The goal isn’t to rush my return, to rush my minutes. I need to build up gradually. God willing, I’ll find my rhythm and be able to help my team.”
His comments suggest that the winger is focused on regaining his sharpness and reaching the level required to make a consistent contribution to Al Shamal. After spending a prolonged period away from competitive football, he recognises that returning to full match fitness will take time.
The goalless draw against Lusail offered Mahrez an opportunity to begin that process, although Al Shamal were unable to secure a victory in his first appearance.
Beyond his return to the pitch, Mahrez also took the opportunity to acknowledge the supporters who came to watch him play. He thanked both Algerian and Qatari fans for their presence and support, highlighting the positive reception he received.
“Thank you to all the Algerians and Qataris who came. It’s a pleasure. It warms my heart to see all the fans with us. God willing, I will make them proud.”
The winger’s message reflected his appreciation for the support from fans as he starts a new chapter in Qatar.
For now, Mahrez’s priority is to regain his match rhythm and gradually increase his involvement with Al Shamal. While his first outing ended without a goal or a victory for his team, the appearance marked a welcome return to competitive action as he looks to build towards a more regular role.
